Mosque Alert

Silk Road Rising

Funding Received: 2015
Naperville, IL
Funding Period: 1 year and 5 months

Naperville is home to one of the highest concentrations of Muslims in the nation. Members of the Muslim community have attempted, on several occasions, to build a Mosque on unincorporated land but have been denied zoning permits to proceed. To shed light on biases that diminish the community's social fabric, the multimedia theater group Silk Road Rising will implement “Mosque Alert,” a civic engagement project that dramatizes the difficulties Muslim Americans often face integrating into their local communities. This project aims to combat cultural biases in aspiration of a more open environment to the creation of a potential new mosque in Naperville, IL.
