Overview

A new position at ArtPlace America, the Managing Editor will be responsible for implementing a content and publishing strategy as developed in partnership with Director of Communications. S/he will plan, create, edit, and publish a variety of rich content across multiple platforms, with key audiences in mind. In addition to managing overall website content, s/he will develop creative ways to share the inspiring stories of people working at the intersection of arts, culture, and equitable community planning. The Managing Editor is a full-time position, reporting to the Director of Communications.

Responsibilities

Developing Content

  • Writes, edits, proofreads, and copyedits a variety of documents, with attention to audience and readability for each platform
  • Cultivates press contacts and writes press releases
  • Works with partners and contractors, such as copywriters, artists, videographers, photographers, practitioners, staff, researchers, and publishers to gather material for publication online and in traditional media, as appropriate
  • Checks content for accuracy and ensures that it complies with copyright and privacy regulations
  • Establishes and oversees journalistic style and editorial vision for ArtPlace

Collaborating

  • Works in close collaboration with the director of communications on overall publishing strategy
  • Manages the scheduling, writing, and editing functions of the organization
  • Supervises contract graphic designers, web designers, and web developers to determine the best way to present information online
  • Coordinates with social media manager on schedule, timing, and delivery of publications
  • Establishes content partnerships with media outlets

Monitoring

  • Ensures that web content meets the needs and interests of website visitors by monitoring visitor behavior and reviewing website and social media statistics
  • Engages and encourages regular feedback from partners and online audiences
  • Tracks keyword, funded project, and partner organization mentions in online media

Skills

  • Excellent writing and editing skills; an eye for detail, with strong spelling, grammar and punctuation skills
  • Understanding of the special requirements of writing for the web, such as the use of keywords, hyperlinks, navigation and the importance of brevity
  • Technical knowledge of web-based publishing, and ability to edit, update, and improve website
  • Dexterity in moving between a range of content types, including: convening reportage, interviewing, scholarly writing, informal blogging, video, and relevant external content
  • Good interpersonal skills to work effectively with staff, partners, and contractors
  • Strong organizational and project management skills to collate material from multiple sources and produce content within tight deadlines

Preferred Qualifications (not all are required)

  • Experience in developing and implementing web content strategy
  • Experience in digital multimedia journalism and editing
  • Six years or more of experience in an editorial or web-related position
  • Deep interest, education, or experience in arts and culture
  • Deep interest, education, or experience in community planning and development
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, mass communication, or related field

This position is budgeted at $70,000 per year with a comprehensive benefits package.
