ArtPlace Virtual Summit Plenaries

October 22, 2020

By: ArtPlace America

As you know this year, ArtPlace America culminates a decade of work as part of an extraordinary community of artists, community developers, culture bearers, designers, government officials, philanthropists, and researchers who have come together from rural, suburban, Tribal, and urban communities across the United States.

In addition, for the first time ever our ArtPlace Annual Summit will be going virtual the week of October 26-30, 2020.

The summit is free to attend, and registration is required.

By registering, you’ll have access to as much or as little of the summit as you like.

For a detailed look at the full agenda, and to register for the Summit, click here.

If you prefer not to register, you can still catch the plenary sessions each day from 2-3pm EDT via livestream on our ArtPlace YouTube.

PLENARIES BY DAY...

October 26, 2020 - 2PM-3PM (EDT)

Creative Placemaking: Where Are We Now? Our collective understanding of creative placemaking has evolved since the launch of ArtPlace ten years ago. It is abundantly clear that creative placemaking is not a neutral practice; it requires us to be intentional to advance racial and economic equity. As we look to the future, we must ask ourselves where are we as a field? What are our collective values? What choices must we make, and what actions must we take based on those values?

October 27, 2020 - 2PM-3PM (EDT)

It’s 2020: What Do Artists Do Next? As many artists, culture-bearers, and designers continue their place-based work to create local and systemic change, what do they need to thrive? Future support structures may need to be imagined, shifted, or even abolished. Join us as artists guide us through their visions – the models and new approaches – that need to bloom for artists and the institutions that support them.

October 28, 2020 - 2PM-3PM (EDT)

Practicing Culture to Build a Post-colonial Economy: How can cultural practice help us break down, survive, and heal from the oppression of extractive, colonial, white supremacist economic structures, and build solidarity economies rooted in shared resources? Join artists, community wealth builders, and creative community development practitioners for a discussion about the critical role of communal, accountable art and ritual in fighting systems of oppression, and building cultural practices that will sustain us through resource sharing and struggles for justice.

October 29, 2020 - 2PM-3PM (EDT)

Navigating Power in Creative Placemaking: We know that the web of people, squads, collectives, organizations, and networks – fired up by love for their communities – is what enables the creative placemaking field to flourish. In a perfect world, these relationships build trust as the people in them practice accountability and collective decision making, acknowledging that everyone’s futures are intimately bound together. Implicit and explicit power dynamics, however, are always present. How do we contend with the power that lives within and alongside these relationships, as well as within ourselves? Join leaders in the field as they reflect, respond, and share stories of stepping into power while centering their work in love.

October 30, 2020 - 2PM-3PM (EDT)

Endings and Beginnings: Help us close the 2020 ArtPlace Virtual Summit and culminate these ten years of working together toward a future that is healthier, more equitable, and more sustainable. ArtPlace and our funding partners will share our gratitude and celebrate the people who have been part of this chapter of the work, and we will close by looking ahead at what will come next year and beyond.
