The visual arts often dominate the Creative Placemaking conversation, and while there is no doubt that they can provide a lasting reminder of a community’s history, they only show part of the picture. What if Creative Placemaking looked beyond the visual arts, and asked a new question: What could a great place sound like?

This ten year initiative to reinvent arts funding in the United States came to a close in 2013. A series of short documentaries chronicling four of the grantees around the country were commissioned: Urban Bush Women in Brooklyn, NY; The Nickelodeon Theater in Columbia, SC; the Montana Arts Council; and Los Cenzontles in San Pablo, CA. The first and last videos in this six-part series explore the vision and premises of this groundbreaking project in cultural philanthropy.

PERFORMING ARTS CENTER: DOES UPTOWN CULTURE STIMULATE DOWNTOWN VITALITY?
Performing arts centers have been touted as a strategy for revitalizing downtowns by increasing activities that bring in residents with higher incomes, tourists,arts employees, educated workers, and housing. Despite their popularity, civic leaders have encountered issues. This dissertation compares downtowns with and without performing arts centers.

Doing well and doing good by doing art

DOING WELL AND DOING GOOD BY DOING ART
Are there connections between involvement in arts learning and general academic success? In 2009, this researcher analyzed ten additional years of NELS data related to the previously studied students, then age 26. The results strongly connect arts learning with both general academic success and pro-social outcomes (i.e., outcomes such as volunteerism, involvement in the community, or civic participation).

The Summit took place in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest gave us a beautiful backdrop to hear from national and local leaders on some of the most pressing issues facing our communities, including immigration, housing, environment, and the rural urban cultural divide.
