SALTQuarters is quickly becoming a creative hub for artistic endeavors that engage with the Near Westside community in Syracuse, New York. SALTQuarters houses an Artist-in-Residence program that create public artwork within the Near Westside neighborhood as well as a flexible gallery space, host to varied types of events related to the arts.

In 2013 the Near Westside Initiative (NWSI), a not for profit with the mission of revitalizing the Near Westside of Syracuse, was funded by ArtPlace, to transform a once vacant restaurant/bar into a hub for artists and creative individuals. In that year, the building was transformed into SALTQuarters, a 4,000 square foot building, with two apartments, three art studios, and a gallery space. The building is located at the corner of the Otisco and Wyoming streets, a critical intersection in the neighborhood where residential meets commercial. SALTQuarters pairs two artists, one national, and one local, for a year-long residency where they share an apartment and studio space, are given a stipend, and are asked to create work that is reflective of, or done in partnership with, the surrounding community.  SALTQuarters also has a gallery space, used by the artist in residence as well as regional artists and neighborhood groups to display thier work and host functions throughout the year.  In addition to the building, SALTQuarters has a large area of green space used for events, exhibitions, and large fabrication.

The Near Westside Initiative, comprised of neighborhood residents and local organizations, is restoring a vibrant urban neighborhood in Syracuse, New York dubbed: the SALT District (stemming from a long history of salt mining in the area). Within the SALT (Syracuse, Art, Literacy, Technology) District, a small neighborhood adjacent to downtown, they are testing the premise that art and culture can unite to create a revitalized community that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but true to the social and cultural values of its residents.
