Phoenix, AZ (population 1.5 million) is home to the Roosevelt Row Community Development Corporation, a previous ArtPlace recipient. Roosevelt Row is now seeking support to plan, design, and create 3 artist live/work units made of repurposed shipping containers. These units can be constructed for half of the typical per unit construction cost, and Roosevelt Row will make the plans openly available for others who want to experiment with this model for low-cost, permanently affordable development. This is a particularly timely moment for this experiment, as Roosevelt Row has led such a successful development effort that work now needs to be done to ensure the people from a diversity of income levels are able to continue to live and work in the district.
