Inspiration/Art Direction Style for the Street Arcade

Updates
December marks the project’s halfway point. Reflecting on the past six months, one of the biggest benefits of the ArtPlace America award has been the opportunity to connect with a diverse group of people and businesses. The award has given us a reason to discuss why the work of creative placemaking is important and has elevated the conversation within the local community. This process is shaping the outcome of the street arcade in important ways. With each meeting, we feel the interest in how arts and culture contribute to making a place vibrant and successful increase. As an individual, the award has helped grant access to decision makers that most artists can’t reach on their own. As the field matures, how will more individuals with creative placemaking ideas get involved? What types of bridges need to be built to connect these individuals to the agencies tasked with city building?

Insight/Provocation
BUILDING A MARKET FOR CREATIVE PRODUCTION: Some places already enjoy the benefits of being a mature market where the masses support creative production. But at some point, they had to create that demand. How was that demand created? How did they move the value of creative thinking into the mass market? What was the tipping point? How is it then sustained to keep it from decline?
