The City of Fargo, ND is located near the Red River, which floods seasonally. Due to geography, Fargo has many storm water retention basins that take up a large amount of public space,  physically separating neighborhoods. Fargo has worked with environmental artist Jackie Brookner and a team of local artists on the creation of a master plan for the World Gardens Commons (WGC) that would transform an 18-acre storm water detention basin located in a community with significant Native American and immigrant residents. The WGC celebrates multiple cultures, provides public amenities, and reconnects a currently isolated neighborhood. Ms. Brookner and teams of artists and city planners would lead community planning and design processes to refine and implement the specific features of the plan, as well as further develop a partnership with social service organizations that work with Native and New American populations around programming and activation.
