This Week at CPL Summit West

February 5, 2019

By: April Greene for ArtPlace America

This Thursday through Saturday, February 7 - 9, creative placemakers from the American southwest and all across the country will gather in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for the first Creative Placemaking Leadership Summit of 2019: CPL Summit West.

In the fall of 2017, the National Consortium for Creative Placemaking (NCCP) and ArtPlace America began partnering to produce an annual series of regional and national CPL Summits. In 2018, we organized five. This year, we’re upping the ante to six.

We love these events because they help grow and professionalize our field by offering all creative placemakers—from those with a lifetime of experience to those just starting out—the opportunity to learn from one another, share their experiences, and broaden their networks. The Summits offer many types of learning activities, from traditional seminars to interactive workshops to peer exchanges.

CPL Summits also strive to model the behaviors we want to see in our field. We collaborate with a wide variety of people and organizations to identify themes, issues, and key audiences for each event, and we recruit partners from under-represented communities in our field—whether those are ethnic, cultural, or sectoral communities. To date, we have worked with more than 100 partners around the United States. Of course, we also know that creative placemakers love to have fun and explore, so we take care to plan engaging social events at interesting spaces in all our host communities.

In Albuquerque this week, we’re looking forward to three days of eye-opening sessions, memorable conversations, and making useful new connections. If you can’t join us in ABQ, there are several ways you can link up from afar:

  • At 12:00 noon Mountain time (2:00 pm Eastern) on Thursday, February 7, ArtPlace’s Senior Program Officer Leila Tamari will be interviewing members of the Rio Grande Valley-based socially engaged art collective Las Imaginistas. You can tune in on Facebook Live!
  • Follow The National Consortium for Creative Placemaking on Twitter and Instagram, and search for anything tagged #cplsummitwest.
  • If you’re closer to Santa Fe, consider joining us for The Santa Fe Experience: a post-conference, overnight field trip that will bring attendees up close and personal with the arts, culture, and history of this beautiful city. A few spots are still available!
