ArtPlace Looks Back at 2011 and Forward to 2012
What is creative placemaking?
Over the last year, ArtPlace has sought to define “creative placemaking” clearly enough to drive momentum while leaving room for artistic freedom and creative innovation. Today, that definition is coming through loud and clear as the variety of projects ArtPlace funded in 2011 have come online.
Creative placemaking can be found in the Lunar New Year parade that The Wing Luke Asian Museum brought out into the streets of Seattle’s International District and in the vision for a new town square for Miami based around the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. It is evident in the 5,500 ft. of new flexible exhibit space developed by the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art and in the Black Cinema House created by art-star-of-the-moment Theaster Gates opening soon.
The video below tells the story of ArtPlace’s efforts in 2011.
